Spider Man – Into Spider-Man’s Web
Spider-Man – In Spider-Man’s Web, hosted at Castel Sismondo in Rimini, is a tribute exhibition celebrating more than sixty years of Spider-Man’s publishing history. Beginning with the comic books where the character first appeared, the exhibition also explores his journey through film and animation.
Created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Spider-Man was a groundbreaking superhero. He was the first teenage protagonist with whom readers could genuinely identify. In his stories, everyday concerns—from paying the rent to dealing with friendships and romance—were just as important as battling supervillains. Over the decades, Spider-Man has evolved alongside the world around him, both within and beyond the pages of comic books. Yet one lesson has remained constant since his very first adventure: with great power comes great responsibility.
The exhibition begins with the legendary Amazing Fantasy #15, tracing how this iconic principle has remained at the heart of Spider-Man’s greatest stories. It also offers visitors a curated reading guide featuring ten essential comics that define the character—from the shocking death of Gwen Stacy, his longtime girlfriend, to the deeply moving The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man, and the unforgettable issue depicting Spider-Man’s response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
A second section is dedicated to Spider-Man’s supporting cast, including his great loves Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson, his beloved Aunt May, and newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson—both his employer and his fiercest critic. It also highlights some of his most iconic costumed adversaries, including Venom, Green Goblin, Lizard, and Kraven the Hunter. The exhibition concludes with a special focus on Spider-Man’s screen career, from the classic 1967 animated television series to the new feature film scheduled for release in August.
Collectors and comic art enthusiasts will find a wealth of original artwork and rare memorabilia on display. A rich gallery of original pages and covers from private collections showcases the work of many of the artists who helped define Spider-Man’s history, including John Romita Sr., who succeeded Ditko as the character’s principal artist; his son John Romita Jr., another cornerstone of Marvel Comics; Todd McFarlane, whose acclaimed Spider-Man run became one of the best-selling in comics history; John Buscema, celebrated for his landmark stories of the 1980s; Mark Bagley, who reinvented the character with Ultimate Spider-Man; Italian artists Stefano Caselli and Giuseppe Camuncoli; and many others.
The exhibition also features vintage publications and collectibles, including a collection of Mego action figures from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the rarest Italian Spider-Man comic ever published: the tiny Peter Parker Laureato! (“Peter Parker Graduates!”), considered the Holy Grail by generations of collectors.
